How many times have you heard the phrase, “Life Happens?”
Reflecting back to my to my childhood, I recall hearing this phrase, being loosely used by my Dad. Like an echo, in response to his own statement, you’d hear “Get use to it.” Pondering within myself, then watching angered look of frustration settle within him, was pretty scary.
We were all programmed. Once he arrived home from drinking, we encountered mood shifts and confrontations. Afterwards came his favorite quote, “Life happens, deal with it.” All verbal conversation, smiles and laugher would instantly cease. The paranoia and fear of us talking behind his back, plagued him everyday. It was all about control, it was like a light switch.
The white walls inside of the house went from sunshine to darkness. Silence filled the cold lifeless house. During the times of silence the three of us communicated with one another by whispering, using jesters and hand signals. My Mother would attempt to make a game out of it, just to ease the tension and stress. We were hostages, moving about the house as if we were walking on eggshells, in fear of awakening the terror. If walls could talk, they would have cried out for help, revealing many secrets…
No one deserves or ever has to accept abuse of any nature, at any age from anyone. If you or you know of someone who is in danger. Tell community service workers or local authorities.
